The Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation within the Faculty of Health Sciences at Istanbul Gedik University was established on March 7, 2018, and commenced its educational activities in the 2018–2019 academic year.
Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation is a scientific discipline that plays an essential role in treating movement disorders caused by diseases, disabilities, or impairments that occur before, during, or after birth. It focuses on restoring lost functions, developing new ones, improving independence in daily life, relieving musculoskeletal pain, and enhancing overall quality of life.
A physiotherapist is a healthcare professional who, within the scope of health protection and promotion, plans and implements preventive physiotherapy and rehabilitation programs for healthy individuals, and by using profession-specific assessment and measurement methods, determines the physiotherapy and rehabilitation needs of patients diagnosed by a physician. Based on these assessments, the physiotherapist plans and applies the appropriate rehabilitation program. To become a physiotherapist, it is necessary to successfully complete a four-year undergraduate program in this field.
Graduates of the Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department work autonomously within an interdisciplinary understanding, maintaining open and equal professional relationships with other healthcare professionals.
The working areas of physiotherapists are expanding every day. These include orthopedic problems, neurological diseases, cardiovascular and respiratory system disorders, rheumatologic conditions, pediatric rehabilitation, sports injuries, hand injuries and postoperative rehabilitation, obstetric and urogynecologic conditions, neurosurgery, plastic and general surgery-related health issues, neonatal and premature care, long-term and intensive care, pain management, and preventive rehabilitation.
After completing 240 ECTS credits by the end of the eighth semester, our students graduate as competent physiotherapists who can plan and implement physiotherapy and rehabilitation interventions in public and private hospitals, clinics, healthcare centers, sports organizations and clubs, wellness and fitness centers, public health institutions, schools and special education centers, rehabilitation centers for children and individuals with disabilities, private medical centers, municipalities, ministries, home care services, and institutions serving patients and individuals with disabilities. Graduates earn the title of “Physiotherapist.”
In addition to clinical practice, physiotherapists may pursue academic advancement by continuing their education in master’s and doctoral programs.
Since Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation is a scientific field that involves the assessment of physical functions of body systems and the implementation of approaches and interventions aimed at improving functional capacity and quality of life, our curriculum has been designed to include comprehensive assessment and measurement methods, interpretation of assessment results, implementation of physiotherapy and rehabilitation programs, evidence-based practices, and community-based rehabilitation. The program emphasizes multidisciplinary collaboration and the importance of knowledge, ethics, humanistic values, and professionalism.
