Istanbul Gedik University was established in 2010 by the Gedik Education Foundation, which has made significant contributions to the education of our country for many years and joined the higher education community. Our founder Halil Kaya Gedik and his wife Vala Gedik’s service approach to education has been adopted as the foundation mission of our University and great importance has been attached to the education of people with special needs. In this respect, with the support of the Istanbul Development Agency between 2013 and 2015, with the cooperation of Pendik District and Pendik Municipality, the Aktif Active Life Center 15 slogan was established with the motto Aktif Active Life Center amacıyla (www.toplumunicinde.com). In addition to the contributions of our university and project partners, the project was sustained with the support of Spor Toto Organization Presidency and 200 children and young people between the ages of 0-24 continued to benefit from the project. With a second grant from ISTKA, on 1 December 2016, private athletes who became Active Life Center Integrated Physical Activity Center have started to participate in physical activity programs together with their peers from surrounding schools.
Developments of children benefiting from the project and positive feedback from parents revealed the importance of qualified services in the fields of education, health, social, culture and sports in order to develop the potential of individuals with special needs and required special attention to be given to good examples to meet this need.
In this context, the ”Vala Gedik Awards” ceremony is held in memory of Vala Gedik, a community volunteer committed to providing useful services to our country since 2015. Within the scope of the ceremony, awards are given to individuals with special needs and individuals, institutions and organizations that have made successful efforts in the delivery and development of services to these persons.
