Third Prize at an International Architectural Competition Awarded to Faculty Members of Istanbul Gedik University Faculty of Architecture and Design
The competition organized this year under the title ArXellence 3, by Alumil and the civil society organization AEGEAS, under the supervision and joint organization of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE), is an international and interdisciplinary architectural competition that aims to preserve the historical memory of Gyaros Island in the Cyclades and to promote sustainability-oriented, interdisciplinary development.
Within the scope of the competition, participants were expected to propose a holistic approach that simultaneously addresses the island’s spatial, environmental, cultural, and social dimensions.
Developed with a sustainability-focused and interdisciplinary perspective, the project aimed not only at spatial transformation but also at the ethical reinterpretation of human–nature–culture relationships. As a result of the evaluation process, our proposal was awarded the Third Prize.
In this competition project, “During the competition process, our team—composed of architects and experts from different disciplines—carried out a long-term study lasting over a year, guided by a strong sense of collective collaboration. In this context, the project aimed to preserve and sustain the collective memory related to the traumatic past of Gyaros Island, while simultaneously developing an environmentally conscious and sustainable model for the island’s future in all its values, and proposing methodologies oriented toward scientific research.”
